Most computing purchases during 1993 represented a consolidation of the existing base of Sun workstations and Macintosh computers to reflect the increase in the number of staff. However, in December the RCfTA purchased a DEC-alpha 3000/600 series specifically for applications which require fast number-crunching. This machine will provide considerable in-house capability to support Helen Pongracic's numerical simulations of star formation and similar self-gravitating hydrodynamical systems, and will also be a valuable tool for radiative transfer calculations and pulsar population studies. The new DEC was used for the calculations required to produce the front cover. The calculations each required six hours of CPU time, and involved 1600 lens planes each containing five lensing galaxies. The images are 512 x 512 pixels.
