"Effects
of charging collisions in dusty plasmas"
Abstract:
The kinetic theory of dusty plasmas, which consistently takes into
account the plasma particles collisions with dust and the dust
charge fluctuations, is used to study the dust-dust interaction
potential and the behavior of the non-hamiltonian sub-system
of dust particles.
It
is shown that the collisions can appreciably alter the screening length,
which can be much smaller than the usual Debye length, and that in some
parameter regimes long-range attraction of negatively charged dust particles
is possible, due to over screening.
It
is shown that the dust-dust collision integral does not conserve the
energy, as a consequence of dust charge variations in the interactions,
and the dust component is unstable to energy growth, an effect directly
related to the mean square dust charge fluctuations.
