Working Groups

The Fellows of the RCfTA have continued their involvement in working groups based at the ATNF. The main activity of these groups has been to arrange meetings to discuss research results of mutual interest to the members.

Lewis Ball arranged a number of meetings of the Supernova Working Group, taking over this role from Dr Dick Manchester of the ATNF who was on study leave for much of the year. Specific meetings on `Why don't the magnetic fields in supernova remnants track the gas?' and the somewhat longer `Why do the location and orientation of the radio (and perfectly corresponding optical) filaments bear little or no relation to the organization of the magnetic field vectors?' were held in February and March respectively. Also, the two-day RCfTA workshop on Supernovae, Supernova Remnants and Pulsars held in September arose from the interests of this working group.

Members of the RCfTA and the ATNF who are interested in pulsars get together over lunch on a weekly basis to discuss exciting developments in observational and theoretical aspects of pulsar research. The `pulsar lunches' are usually held at the ATNF and occasionally at the RCfTA.
