Information for New Staff and Students
Transport and Building Access
The School is located in a central position on the main campus at Camperdown (the Annex and Physics buildings on Physics Rd). It is within easy walking distance of several lunch outlets, newsagencies, a post office, most major banks, health, dental and ophthalmic services. In addition, the University has a Sports Union with a wide range of sports and gym equipment available, including tennis and squash courts, with a centre adjacent to the main Physics building.

Transport offered by Physics or the University
- The School of Physics has four vehicles available for University business for staff or postgraduate students. Please send a request to Main Office to register and book. A valid NSW or International Driver licence must be presented during registration. Existing bookings can be viewed on the online calendar.
- If the School vehicles are unavailable you may hire a vehicle through the University or AVIS. The staff in the Main Office can assist.
- Cabcharges should be used for short trips within the city, but you will need to quote an account code. Cabcharges can be obtained from the Main Office.

Staff and Visitor Parking
If you require a parking permit for your vehicle please see the University Security Parking page or the Campus Infrastructure Services office, Level 2 Building G12, where you can apply in person (tip: be prepared for a queue).
When visitors arrive in the School of Physics a one-day parking permit can be issued. Arrangements must be made with the Main Office prior to the visit to obtain the one-day permit for your visitor. An account number must be provided upon arrangement.
In addition, the School has a single floating annual permit for short-stay use by visitors.
Anyone parking on campus without a permit can be fined by the Univeristy's Security Services, to the sum of $75 and upwards. Please see Policies on Parking for more information.
The School of Physics building is open between approximately 7:15 am and 5:15 pm Monday to Friday. If you require access outside these hours please request an request an out of hours access card. If you are new staff, please obtain a Staff Card first. The building access can then be encoded onto the card's magnetic strip.
Facilities in the University and Surrounding Region
Physics Facilities
The Tearoom is room 316. Staff and research students can use the fridge, coffee machine, hot water and microwave facilities. 11am is designated teatime, with provided biscuits, and is a great way to find a conversation over a cup of tea.
The Mailroom is room 216. This houses the incoming and outgoing mail, photocopiers and printers. See the relevant sections of the Office & IT page.
There are printers in various locations throughout the building, for various research groups. Ask your supervisor which is the closest.
Bathrooms: On the ground floor there are male toilets near the courtyard exit of A28. There is a female staff toilet here also. The next level up (level 3) has a male toilet at the East end of the building, and a female toilet around in the Annexe A29. Near the other end of the corridor is a female toilet, and male bathroom.
Waste management includes garbage bins and paper recycling bins situated throughout the Physics building. Please see the Sustainability page for more information. For hazardous waste also please talk to your supervisor and lab manager.
There are 8 lecture theatres in the Physics building, and various tutorial rooms. See the Teaching and Learning information page for more details, and for how to book.
There is a snack vending machine in the ground floor corridor at the western end of the building.
To help with locating medium to long term accommodation there is a University Accommodation service, and also a University Student Accommodation search function (MyUni login required).
Also there is a list of colleges and hotels, mostly for short term accommodation.
For long term accommodation you can search for places to rent in the region at http://www.domain.com.au.
Food and Drink
Campus Food and Drink
There is on-campus food available at
- Ralph's: in Arena centre, across the road from the Physics building
- The Grandstand
- Bosch café, opposite Women's college on the way to Newtown
- Manning House, next to the grass tennis courts.
- Wentworth building, across City rd.
- Isabel Fidler building, next to Wentworth.
- Holme building, past Manning towards Parramatta road.
in order of proximity. There's a list of other nearby cafes and small kiosks.
For purchasing from oncampus retail outlets, consider the Access card, for students, and Staff card, both of which offer discounts at campus retail locations, and other benefits.
Campus sources of coffee include:
- Ralph's, in Arena building
- Azzuri's, in the lower floor of Wentworth
- Manning building
- Holme building
- 'Coffee Carts'; kiosks found around the place
and others. There is also a coffee machine in the Physics tearoom. 50 cents is requested for each cup, to pay for beans and machine maintenance.
Regional Food and Drink
There is an extensive collection of restaurants and eateries offcampus in the neighbouring suburbs of Newtown, Broadway, Glebe and Darlington.
There are many pubs in the region, including the on-campus pubs Manning and Hermann's. Pubs in the region include the Rose, Royal, Duck and Swan, and many others in Newtown.
Off-campus coffee sources are:
- Toby's Estate, on City road beside Victoria park, on the way to Broadway
- Campos, in Newtown
- Macro Café, in Newtown
and undoubtedly many others in the surrounding suburbs.
Community Facilities
See the university's site for University facilities, activities and culture.Particularly, Wentworth building has a host of medical and other facilities.
There is a large range of sport and fitness facilities on campus. See the Sports Union site. The nearest Gym is across the road from physics in Arena building.
For those with children, there is Newtown Public School, and University service for finding child care options.
