Information for New Staff and Students

Safety, Emergency Procedure and OHS

University Emergency Procedures

See the USyd main emergency procedure page. Of particular importance are the following:

Physics Fire Procedure

  • The Physics building has a new fire alarm system installed. Please see the previous section for operational details.
  • Please become accustomed to the exits of the Physics buildings. During a fire evacuation procedure follow instructions of the Fire Wardens (wearing green hard hats) and the Fire rescue crew.
  • The assembly area for the physics buildings is the grass square opposite the building, below the tennis courts.
Physics Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)

The School takes OH&S matters seriously, and has a duty of care to staff, students and visitors. The School and University also believe OH&S is the responsibility of all staff and students. There is information on OHS at the School's OH&S web page, with information on and links to University OHS and Injury Management, Risk Management (insurance) and forms. Also, lists are given of first aid officer contacts and building wardens (in emergency control situations).

The first item on the web page is an incident and injury report form, to be completed whenever this may occur.

Physics Injury and First Aid Officers

There are a number of First Aid Officers in the School (contact details on posters throughout Physics buildings). In the event of any accident or injury to any persons within the School a First Aid Officer should be contacted immediately. First Aid kits are available from several locations, including the Main Office.

Lab Safety

Please ensure OHS training is completed.

Firstly, the School of Physics has a university run OHS presentation every semester that every new staff member and research student must attend. See here for the Powerpoint slides for the Safety Seminar.

Also there may be lab safety training specific to your laboratory. Please ask your supervisor for details, and see these university OHS laboratory safety pages for safety information common to many laboratories in the university:

There are generally lab managers for research and teaching labs, and lab safety officers. Ask your supervisor for details.
