Foundation Scholarships & Prizes

Science Foundation for Physics Scholarships

Each year, up to five physics students in each of the junior, intermediate and senior years receive a Science Foundation for Physics Scholarship. The prizes – worth $700 in the junior year, $800 in the Intermediate year and $3000 in the senior year – recognise excellence and encourage students to continue their studies in physics.

The Scholarships are awarded at the annual School of Physics Prize Ceremony. Beyond the Science Foundation scholarships, the School of Physics awards over $50,000 worth of prizes honouring excellence and achievement to undergraduate and honours students each year. A list of the prizes and recent winners can be found at the School of Physics Prizes website.

Harry Messel Award for Excellence

Harry Messel's motto, adopted by the Foundation, is "the pursuit of excellence". When Harry retired in December 1987, the Science Foundation inaugurated the Harry Messel Award for Excellence to recognise and reward excellence in contributions by staff or research students to the School's research and teaching. The Award is made every two or three years and the winner is presented with a cheque for $2,500 and a medal.
