Honouring Excellence in 2010 - A Tribute to Emeritus Professor Harry Messel AC CBE
The Science Foundation for Physics honoured founder, Emeritus Professor Harry Messel AC CBE, as he celebrated his 88th birthday in 2010. His contribution to science and technology within Australia has been significant. His passion and enthusiasm for physics knows no bounds. His vision for a science literate community and the encouragement of young people to pursue a career in science is inspired. As Head of the School of Physics at The University of Sydney Messel built SILLIAC - the first Australian-built first automatic computer, raised funds for physics research and teaching, founded the Science Foundation for Physics (the first Foundation in Australia), understood the importance of science education and communication encouraging Year 11 and 12 students to pursue careers in science through the International Science School.
Alumni and friends showed their appreciation of Professor Harry Messel's visionary contribution to science and technology within Australia at a gala reception held on Thursday 20 May 2010 in The Great Hall of the University of Sydney.
Gala Reception for ISS2009
In 2009 the special event of the year was a Gala Reception held in the Great Hall of the University of Sydney on Wednesday 22nd July. Coinciding with the 35th Professor Harry Messel International Science School (ISS), the 165 ISS scholars, escorts and staff mingled with some 200 alumni and Foundation supporters. This was a truly magnificent way to showcase the work of the Foundation in supporting the School of Physics through its flagship program of 'honouring scientific excellence' in final year high school students and encouraging them to consider further studies and careers in science.
The Universe at Light Speed & Annual Dinner: 27 March 2008
The Physics Alumni Dinner, held 27 March 2008, was a great success. It was terrific to meet so many alumni and friends in person. The Universe at Light Speed sparked interesting questions and discussions and will be likely to make an encore appearance as part of the Sydney Science Forum in the near future. Thanks to our Federation Fellows, Professor Joss Bland-Hawthorn, Professor Ben Eggleton and Professor Bryan Gaensler.
The Dinner also saw Mrs Louise Davis, immediate Past-President, Science Foundation for Physics graciously hand over the reins to incoming President, Mr Trevor Danos. Mr Danos is an ISS alumnus and an avid supporter not only of the Foundation but also of science. As a lawyer currently working through a Bachelor of Science the Foundation looks forward to benefiting from his insightful input and enthusiasm.
