Postgraduate Awards in Applied Nuclear Science

Since 2008, the Institute of Nuclear Science within the School of Physics offers two postgraduate coursework awards in the area of Applied Nuclear Science. Students may undertake coursework towards the Master of Applied Nuclear Science (MAppNucSci) or a Graduate Diploma in Applied Nuclear Science (GradDipAppNucSci). Entry is only in Semester 1, mid-year entry is currently not available.

Master of Applied Nuclear Science and Graduate Diploma in Applied Nuclear Science

These courses are designed to meet the growing demand both within Australia and worldwide for individuals with specialist postgraduate education and training in nuclear science and technology. The School of Physics is offering a wide range of coursework units of study, covering the key areas of knowledge in nuclear science, including nuclear physics, radiation physics, reactor physics, as well as environmental and health issues. Students undertaking the Masters program will also gain research experience and may be given the opportunity to undertake a research project using Australia's research nuclear reactor OPAL, located at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

The coursework units of study to be undertaken for both the MAppNucSci and GradDipAppNucSci awards are:

  • PHYS 5011 Nuclear Physics
  • PHYS 5012 Radiation Physics and Dosimetry
  • PHYS 5013 Nuclear Instrumentation
  • PHYS 5014 Applications of Nuclear Physics
  • PHYS 5015 Reactor Physics and Systems
  • PHYS 5016 Nuclear Chemistry and Nuclear Fuel Cycle
  • PHYS 5017 Energy Options and Environment
  • PHYS 5018 Health Physics and Radiation Protection

Each of these core units of study are worth 6 credit points (cps). The MAppNucSci also requires the 24 cp unit PHYS 5019 Research Methodology & Project to be undertaken. Some of the coursework units are in common with those of the Medical Physics coursework program also offered by the School of Physics.
